RE: Pay Day

According to the Post-Dispatch's Vahe Gregorian, Mizzou's own Pat Forde might have jumped the gun a little bit by reporting Pinkel's contract extension:

A contract enhancement for Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel reported at 10 a.m. Friday on ESPN.com is premature, according to Missouri spokesman Chad Moller.

What the web site called “a lucrative contract extension” agreed to “in principle,” Moller said, has not been finalized.

With a request that it not be published, an MU source told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday that an extension was imminent for Pinkel, who has led MU to successive Big 12 North titles with teams that have gone 21-4 the last two seasons to make him more and more appealing to other schools.

ESPN reported the raise would be to about $2.5 million a year, including base salary and other guaranteed compensation.

Moller could not confirm the number, which would be about a $700,000 raise from Pinkel's current salary as negotiated in an extension last December.

Missouri athletics director Mike Alden was out of the office and unavailable for comment Friday morning.

My take: Mizzou's close to a deal but doesn't have all the specifics worked out. Naturally, they wouldn't want any reports about a new contract to be leaked until it's been finalized. I wouldn't worry too much about this. Seems unlikely that HCGP and Mike Alden (a guy who has been extremely loyal to Pinkel through the years) would get close to a new deal only to have it completely fall apart and end with Pinkel at another school.

Obviously good for you guys to keep him around, but what are the chances of keeping Christensen around? Seems like he would be ready for an HC job right?

I'd be surprised if Christensen is around next year. He's been mentioned as a candidate at a number of schools. I'd look for Toledo to land him. Eberflus could be gone as well although I'm not sure that's such a bad thing.

So, what hit does the program take if Christensen leaves? It isn't like Brad Smith is around the corner...

Losing Christensen would be a considerable blow, there's no doubt about it. But if all it takes to cause your team to collapse is losing a coordinator then you don't belong with college football's big boys anyways.

Gary Pinkel has built a solid PROGRAM. That's the key. It's not just the offense that's experienced success.
